According to Nigerian Premium Times, the Comptroller-General of the Nigerian Custom Service, Hameed Ali has lashed out at shipping companies in Nigeria for their role in the importation of illicit firearms into the country.
He was speaking at a meeting with the Nigeria Shippers Council and other stakeholders of the sector.
According to Mr. Ali, the only way to halt the illegal importation of arms is through collaboration between the customs and other stake holder authorities.
Mr. Ali, a retired Colonel indicated that from January to September, they have been able to intercept 2,671 pump action rifles between Apapa and Tincan Island ports.
This he says has become “a cause for concern not only to us Customs but to all Nigerians and their neighbours”.
“For example, in Cameroon, they are facing secession, we believe that some of these arms are meant to be channelled to those who are agitating…” He said.
As a solution to the problem, Mr Ali proposed that heavy sanctions be meted out on illegal arms importers to serve as a warning for others.
