The Mayor of Buea, Mafani Namange has reportedly sealed some shops for succumbing to the traditional ‘ghost town’ in his municipality.
According to a security meeting held some days back, the Mayor had vowed to take severe measures to stop businesses from closing their shops on lockdown days.
“Any business premise which has the audacity to close down under the pretext of ghost town, we are going to help him or her to close down permanently by sealing such shops or businesses,” Mayor Mafani stated.
Traders whose shops have been sealed by the Buea council will have to pay the sum 50,000 FCFA before they can reopen their shops.
Mondays have been imposed as a traditional lockdown day by separatist fighters since the start of the Anglophone crisis in 2016.
Many have been murdered in the course of going against the said instructions including taxi drivers and travellers.
The decision by the Mayor has left many inhabitants of Buea caught in-between whom to respect given the death threats involved.
