After Queen’s Passing, Cameroon’s President Paul Biya Becomes World’s Oldest Leader In Service

The world was taken aback on September 8, 2022 with the passing of Queen Elizabeth II of England

After the death of the Queen, Cameroon’s long standing president, Paul Biya, now holds record of the oldest leader in the world currently in service and Africa’s longest serving president

Born on 13 February 1933 in Mvomeka’a village in Cameroon’s South Region, Paul Barthélemy Biya’a bi Mvondo, is a few months away from 90

Biya is often referred to as “a dictator” especially because of his approach in resolving the Anglophone crisis for more than five years, which has led to more than five thousand deaths.

He became president in 1982. He took over from Cameroon’s first president, Ahmadou Ahijo after serving as Prime minister in 1975.

He has won all multiparty elections since 1992, and the opposition has always complained of heavy election rigging

As Anglophones and some political parties continue to mount pressure on Biya and his government, there are speculations that he might run again for the 2025 elections in Cameroon.
