Cameroon’s top military squad, the Rapid Intervention Battalion (BIR) has started recruitment
In December 2020, some young Cameroonians started depositing application files across the national territory after minister Beti Assomo said the government needed at least 2,200 more Cameroonians to be recruited by the beginning of 2021
A press document released this week has stated that the recruitment process for the restive Northwest and Southwest regions will be held in Bafoussam and Douala, for security reasons.
Critics have mocked the venue choice saying the same government authorities always refused to acknowledge that there’s insecurity in these regions.
The recruitment is coming with the rise in tensions of the Anglophone crisis which began since 2016.
The crisis has left many soldiers killed in gun battles with separatist fighters.
Just like separatist camps, the military squad is reported to have lost hundreds of soldiers, dozens injured and some who have fled the military service to seek refuge elsewhere.
The Cameroon military is simultaneously battling with Boko Haram attacks in the North and the Anglophone crisis in the North West and South West regions
