Women in Ekona, a small town in Muyuka Subdivision of the South West Region, mobilized and stormed Buea, the regional capital, on February 15, 2023.
The women gathered infront of the National Gendarmerie in Buea to protest against what they call “indiscriminate arrest and detention of thier sons” by government military.
The protest follows numerous military assaults in the locality, most recently the arrest of several young men and an elderly person.A local source said “On Sunday, 12 February 2023, a host of military men stormed Ekona and arrested innocent youths playing football on the field and carried them to an unknown destination.”
Adding that on Tuesday, February 14, the military reappeared and arrested more people.
“Today, again, they came and arrested some youths in the quarter and killed one innocent young guy who was just from taking a bath,” a native decried.
The women are saddened by the constant arrest of thier children and relatives under the pretext of being Amba fighters.
Ekona is a few kilometres away from Buea, capital of the South West Region. Buea has suffered re-ocurrent clashes between the military and separatist fighters since the start of the Anglophone crisis in 2016.
