“You Deserve National Respect For Saying No to Lockdown & Ghost Towns”- Bernard Okalia Praises Limbe Over FESTAC Success

By Ndzi Yengong

While Buea, Mutengene and mile 4 were feeling the devastating effects of the Fako lockdown imposed by restorationist forces, the city of friendship, LIMBE was at its peak of celebration on Saturday April 6, 2019.

The Limbe Festival of Arts and Culture (FESTAC) is taking place this year under an atmosphere of threat from separatists who instilled a 10 days lockdown in the entire Fako division, an attempt to disrupt the festival.

This was not the case as FESTAC pulled thousands who came to celebrate on the launch day. Through dance, music, live performances, sculptures, paintings and poetry, a wide range of cultures were represented showing cultural diversity.

The event started with a carnival match which saw hundreds of young people match from Mile 2 to the Limbe community field despite gunshots early that morning. Reports say the gunshots which lasted for over 30 minutes were in a bid to scare inhabitants from participating in the March.

This made South West governor, Bernard Okalia to praise Limbe for her refusal to adhere to ghost towns and Lockdowns imposed by separatist fighters.

“Limbe has said no to ghost towns and lockdowns, Limbe has fought violence and destruction of property and years of investment, Limbe deserves the respect of the nation” – he said in his speech at the launch of the ceremony.

FESTAC which is one of the most popular cultural events in the country started on Saturday the 6th and is expected to run through to the 13th of April 2019.
