Biya Declares Monday Public Holiday

President Paul Biya has declared Monday, August 14,2023, a public holiday all over the National territory. The Presidential decree was signed on Thursday, August 10, 2023.

This holiday is brought about by the fact that the day comes after a Sunday and is immediately preceding the Day of Assumption, which falls on Tuesday, August 15, 2023.

Catholics hold that Mary, Jesus’ mother, entered heaven on the same day, body and soul. Law No. 1973 establishes and regulates Cameroon’s legal holiday system.

As a result of Law 73/5 of December 7, 1973, to govern public holidays, as amended and reinforced by Law No. 76/8 of July 8, 1976, a very long weekend that will last until Tuesday, August 15, 2023, can be expected in Cameroon.

Article 1:3 views Ascension Day, Good Friday, The Assumption, Christmas, the celebration marking the end of Ramadan, the festival honouring sheep, and other religiously inspired holidays as lawful religious holidays that are observed as such.

According to Article 4 of the same law, the President of the Republic may announce a holiday by decree if the day after a religiously recognised legal holiday falls on a Sunday or if the day before or the day after a recognised legal holiday falls on a Friday or a Tuesday.
