NIGER: AU In Disagreement With ECOWAS’ Military Intervention

Members of the African Union Peace and Security council have reportedly shown disagreement over a millitary Intervention in Niger.

During a convened meeting lead by Burundi on 14 August, 2023, majority of the members of the Southern and Northern part of Africa voted strongly against any millitary Intervention in Niger.

The Economic Community of West African States(ECOWAS) had earlier stated their intention to secure calm in Niger by sending troops into the nation.

However, the move was rejected by the leader of the revolutionary junta, Tchiani Abdouramane.

Abdouramane stated that any military intervention in Niger by ECOWAS would be considered a ‘declaration of war’.
