Current Gabon President, Ali Bongo Ondimba announced on Sunday, July 9, 2023 that he would stand a third term in the country’s presidential elections coming up next month.
“I officially announce that I am a candidate for the presidential election,” he announced the president during a rally
The 64-year-old president was initially elected in 2009, following the death of his father, Omar Bongo Ondimba, who had ruled the country for over 30 years.
He was re-elected in 2016 and is eligible to run for re-election under the present constitution.
Unlike Senegal’s President, Macky Sall who gave up his opportunity to run for elections in his country after two terms, his colleague is grabbing the chance full flesh.
On August 26, Gabon will hold its presidential election alongside the legislative elections.
