These are viral images of Cameroon opposition leader, Maurice Kamto’s visit to Paris, France
Kamto pulled an unexpected crowd as thousands rallied to listen to him.
As aspirant in the October 2018 presidential elections, Kamto and his MRC won 14 percent of the votes, placing second after incumbent President Paul Biya.
He is the candidate who rejected the results, denouncing alleged electoral irregularities. He declared himself the official winner leading to several mass protests.
He was charged with sedition, insurrection, inciting violence, and hostility, and was subsequently jailed from January 28 to October 5, 2019.
Even after his release, Kamto continues to pummel Paul Biya with a rivalry.
But Biya’s visit to Paris turned sour months ago.
In November 2019, Members of Brigade Anti Sardinards (BAS) stormed Hotel Le Meurice where he was lodged, demanding the release of all political prisoners and that he steps down from power. He was in France to attend the Paris Peace Summit.
At 86 Paul Biya has marked 37 years in Power. He became president of Cameroon on November 6, 1982 following the resignation of Ahmadou Ahidjo.
President Paul Biya’s regime has been hugely accused for corruption, embezzlement and dictatorship with the continuous silencing of political opponents, activists and journalists opposed to his regime – Cameroonians are protesting for him to step down.
Paul Barthelemy Biya Bi Mvondo is currently one of the longest-ruling non-royal leaders in the world and oldest ruler in Africa.
He will be 92 when his current mandate ends in 2025. More than 65 percent of Cameroonian youths were not born before he assumed office as Head of State in 1982.
