ECOWAS has disapproved of the decision of coup leaders to accuse Mohamed Bazoum of high treason.
The National Council for the Safeguarding of the Fatherland’s decision to charge Mohamed Bazoum with high treason has prompted a response from the Heads of State of ECOWAS.
The continental organisation condemned the move and issued a press release warning to the junta.
ECOWAS announced in a statement on Monday, August 14,that it had learned of the threats “with stupefaction”.
“It represents yet another form of provocation and contradicts the reported willingness of the military authorities in the Republic of Niger to restore constitutional order through peaceful means,” the bloc said.
ECOWAS affirms that Mohamed Bazoum, the president of Niger who was duly elected, is still in power.
