President Idriss Deby has died at the age of 68 after he suffered from injuries received at the frontline, an army spokesman said.
According to the army’s spokesman, Deby halted his speech after he won his 6th mandate on Monday and went to visit soldiers battling rebels in the northern region, army spokesman said on Tuesday.
“Deby has just breathed his last defending the sovereign nation on the battlefield” over the weekend, an army spokesman General Azem Bermandoa Agouna said in a statement read out on state television.
General Mahamat Kaka, the son of the deceased Chadian leader, has been named interim Head of state, the army spokesman said.
Chad’s military spokesman Agouna added that army troops killed more than 300 fighters while five government soldiers were killed and 36 were injured on Saturday.
