Each month, the Cameroonian State and its arms consume up to CFA2.9 billion worth of electricity.
This was disclosed by the minister of power, Basile Atangana Kouna, during a recent workshop with the financial backers of the Nachtigal construction project, Business Cameroon reports.
However, due to the cash stress the government usually experiences, this bill is often not paid in time, leading to a debt accumulation.
For instance, a source with knowledge of the matter said, in 2016, Eneo, Cameroon’s public power utility, demanded the payment of a debt amounting to CFA34 billion for electricity consumed by the State. Out of this sum, the government had finally agreed to make a prepayment of CFA14 billion.
