Ayah Foundation Raises Alarm Over Life-Threating Situation Of Anglophone Detainees At Buea Central Prison

Ayah Ayah Abine, president of the Ayah Foundation after visiting the Buea central prison says unless urgent medical attention is provided to most of the detainees they risk not walking out of prison.

The president of the Ayah Foundation, Ayah Ayah Abine, has cautioned that if urgent medical attention is not provided to most of the Anglophone detainees who are currently languishing at the congested Buea central prison, majority of them risk not walking out of there alive.

He made the remark when the Ayah Foundation team recently visited inmates of the detention facility to donate live-saving items to the over three hundred and fifty inmates; majority of them said to be living under deplorable situations.

“There are tear-breaking experiences in there, I prefer the world doesn’t even get to know about them. They are some of them in very bad shape and if urgent medical attention is not given to scores of them then we may have many more deaths in the coming days.” He cried out adding that “we learnt that they are a lot of them sleeping on the floor reason why we gave them matrasses that will protect their body from getting into direct contact with cold thus pre-empting some unwanted circumstances.”

Thanks to the donation, many Anglophones arrested and detained at the Buea Central Prison in relation to the ongoing socio-political unrest will for the first time be able to sleep on near-comfortable beds since their arrest and subsequent detention- All thanks to the timely and generous intervention of members of the Ayah Foundation.

Not only did the foundation provide quality matrasses to the over three hundred and fifty Anglophone detainees said to be living under life-threating conditions, they equally provided life-saving provisions so as to sustain the detainees till their next rendez vous or liberation.

The donation ceremony which happens to be the second to inmates of the detention and correction facility in Buea saw the foundation donating close to two hundred high quality and resistant matrasses, ten bags of rice, bags of garri and potatoes, cartoons of cooking oil, tomatoes, and plantains amongst other food stuff to the detainees.

Bathing soup, Savon, toiletries, dresses, shoes and flip-flops (slippers) were equally handed to the detainees who did not fail to shower members of the foundation for coming to their rescue and putting smiles on their faces.

The highly-appreciated gesture by the humanitarian foundation which is in partnership with other nongovernmental organizations equally provides free legal representation to the detainees according to the president, Ayah Ayah Abine, was mid-wifed some decades ago to reach out to the vulnerable in the society.

His words “We are currently doing a nationwide tour of detention centers throughout the nation…last week we were in the nation’s capital of Yaounde were we provided support to those detained at the central prison, today we are in Buea and from here we are moving to the North West region. We aim at reaching out to them, empowering them and in our own subtle way impacting their lives and helping them to understand that they are not alone.”

While urging people of goodwill to partner with them so as to assist and reach out to those in deplorable situations, Ayah Ayah Abine says categorical that the foundation will ensure that all Anglophone detainees are catered for and provided with the necessary support be it, material, financial, health-wise or legally oriented that they might need.
