Following the the resignation of Rev Fr Dieudonne Akawung Tazisong as Catholic priest, the Bishop of Mamfe
Diocese, Aloysius Abangalo Fondong
has urged christians to pray for the latter.
On February 20, in a pastoral letter to Roman Catholic christians, Bishop Aloysius states that Rev Fr Akawung seizes to be a cleric, calling on christians to pray that “he remains a faithful and proven son of the Church.”
The Bishop wrote to encourage christians to keep praying that Mr Dieudonne will continue to take part in the life of the people of God in a manner consonant with his status as a layperson.
This comes after Pope Francis recently approved Rev Fr Dieudonne’s request to quit clerical duties.
“Sometime ago, Rev Fr Dieudonne Akawung Tazisong, priest of the Diocese of Mamfe, humbly requested from Pope Francis the dispensation from sacred celibacy and from all other obligations concerned with sacred ordination to the priesthood. In response, His Holiness Pope Francis, through a rescript of dispensation, has graciously granted the request,” Bishop Abangalo Fondong wrote.
However, no explanation has been given by the Bishop on why he is quitting his position.
Dieudonne Akawung becomes the second priest of the Bamenda Ecclesiastical Province of the Catholic Church to quit clerical duties within a year.
George Galame, a priest of Buea Diocese, quitted priesthood and proposed to his girlfriend during her birthday party in America in February last year.
