Bamenda: Six Inmates Die, Several Others Hospitalised After Eating Poisoned Meal

Six prisoners have passed away at the  Bamenda Central Prison in the North West Region of Cameroon after consuming poisoned food.

Four of them were rushed for treatment at the Bamenda Regional Hospital under critical conditions.

It is reported that a yet-to-be-identified individual brought the ‘poisoned food’ eaten by the inmates in detention.

“We learned that a security officer on Sunday, June 26th, 2023, brought the food and it was handed to one inmate who then shared it with others,” a source recounted.

However, it remains unclear if it was a security officer responsible or not.

Before any meal reaches prisoners, the person who brings the meal eats a bit of it and sits for a few minutes under the observation of prison guards. If he or she doesn’t react negatively, the meal is then served to the prisoner intended for.

Many wonder how a poisoned meal got into the prison without being checked. The fallen victims were rushed to the mortuary in Bamenda.
