Recently, the World Health Organisation (WHO) has issued a warning about the spread of a tainted cough syrup called “Naturcold” in Cameroon.
The product was discovered to have an inadequate level of diethylene glycol, which is regarded as a pollutant, according to a statement released by WHO on Wednesday, July 19, 2023.
Diethylene glycol must not exceed 0.10 percent in accordance with the Organization’s guidelines, however samples of the syrup tested positive for 28.6 percent of that substance.
Dr. Eko Eko, the regional representative for public health in the South-West, had warned Cameroonians about the risk Naturcold syrup poses to children’s health in a press statement that was made public on March 9. After consuming the syrup, three kids in the South West lost their lives.
After six children under the age of five died from the same medicine on 13 April, it was Dr Kingsley Che Soh’s time to raise the alert as the North West regional health delegate.
The WHO has also cautioned that the contagious cough may spread to neighboring country, Nigeria.
